The excitement of catching the first fish of the season has begun. Daily folks ask if any fish, kings, have been caught. There hasn't been much crossing the docks yet but soon everything will kick into high gear. And word has it, it's going to be a record year. Projections are great!
Everyday I come to work and hear similar questions. I like the questions about fish. Everyone is thinking the same thing. Knudson Cove, Ketchikan, and all of Southeast Alaska, are fishing communities that revolve around the sea. Livelihoods are made at sea. Family and friends bond over fishing. Meals are made from the ocean. History is created through stories passed on providing a strand that weaves people together. Excitement is in the air and is cause for celebration, maybe a barbecue, refreshments, and a fire.
Speaking of celebration... Today, May 2nd, is the 14th Annual Celebration of the Sea Art Walk sponsored by Ketchikan Arts. Shops will be open for browsing local artwork between 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. After work head downtown to see some art, hear some music, and usher in the new season.
Be sure to let us know what you've caught. Post a picture in the comments if you'd like.
