The weather in Ketchikan last week was phenomenal. Sunshine and warm temperatures are the ingredients to get everyone outside! Tuesday was no exception to this rule. The only difference was it was my day off. What was I going to do? I had all kinds of options from kayaking, and fishing, to hiking. After debating it over breakfast with a friend, we decided hiking was the best choice.
The hike we chose was Dude Mountain. I had never done it. It's a quick steep walk to the top with an elevation gain of 1500 ft in a mile and a half. The trip to the top took us about an hour and a half. It's estimated the average hiker covers about a mile an hour.
The trail switchbacks most of the way, until the top third, then it rises sharply towards the top. The views are amazing. The top of Dude is covered in pine with trails that wind through to multiple views. Also, once up there it is a short walk to other mountains in the area.
We got lucky on our hike up Dude. There was a slight breeze which kept the bugs down. It was also considerably cooler than being in town or on the water. It was great to hang out on top for a while taking in the views.
